SC-RISE Expands Global Cooperation with South Korean Agreement

chungnam universityAn agreement between by UC Riverside Chancellor Timothy P. White and counterparts at South Korea's Chungnam National University in April opens the door to increased international collaboration in solar energy research.

The two universities will collaborate on environmental research under the agreement, the first opportunity being solar research with UCR's Southern California Research Initiative for Solar Energy (SC-RISE)

The announcement comes two years after CE-CERT signed a similar agreement with Tohoku University in Japan. Since then, researchers have traveled between the campuses and held monthly teleconferences.

UC Riverside is also talking with several universities in Europe about establishing comparable agreements, said Reza Abbaschian, dean of UC Riverside's Bourns College of Engineering.

"This speaks to the reputation for excellence and innovation in energy and environmental research we have established nationally and internationally," Abbaschian said.

UCR researchers will be working with faculty at Chungnam's College of Engineering and its new Graduate School of Green Energy Technology.

The agreement also foresees expanding research collaborations to include areas of strength of the College of Engineering's Center for Environmental Research and Technology (CE-CERT), including air quality issues, sustainable communities, energy conservation and new energy systems.
